The Mathematical Contest in Modeling - an opportunity to get involved
Get involved with mathematical modeling, a way to approach real-life problems using mathematics, by joining UNL's team for the upcoming 2024 Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM). If you are interested in doing this, please email aseceleanu@unl.edu as soon as possible.
What is the Mathematical Contest in Modeling?
The Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM) and Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling (ICM) are international contests for high school students and college undergraduates. The contests challenge teams of up to three students to analyze, model, solve, and present solution reports to an open-ended application problem.
Background and training
There is no specific background required to participate. You can apply any methods you wish to solve mathematical modeling problems. If there is sufficient interest, we will organize some training sessions in the new year (January of 2024) to help you learn more modeling techniques.
When does the MCM take place?
The contest takes place between 4pm of Thursday, February 1, 2024 to 7pm on Monday, February 5, 2024.
What's in it for you?
The contests provide a challenge to solve a real-world application problem and get recognition for it on an international stage. It's an excellent opportunity to develop your interpersonal skills through teamwork, develop technical writing and communication skills through your written report, feel a sense of accomplishment, and earn an impressive resume credential. Students and advisors report that participation and success in MCM/ICM provides an advantage when applying for internships and jobs.
