The Math and Data Science Student Spotlight is your opportunity to learn a bit more about one of your fellow Math majors at UNL. This week, Zach Hammann from Maple Grove Minnesota, is in the spotlight.

Where are you from?
I am from Maple Grove, Minnesota.
What gets you excited about Math?
The problem solving aspect of Math excites me the most. Being able to apply theory to real world problems in an effort to solve real and impactful issues is awesome!
Favorite math class or instructor so far? Why?
My favorite math classes have been Math 428 Principles of Operations Research and Math 310 Modern Algebra! My favorite instructors have been Dr. Josh Brummer, Dr. Alexandra Seceleanu, and my postdoc instructor Ishan!
I also can't forget the grad students I've had the privilege of working with: Julia Courtney, Julianne Faur, and Ana Podariu!
What are you excited about doing after graduation?
After graduation, I'm excited to start applying my learnings in industry as a data scientist! I am also super excited for an upcoming hiking trip in Spain!
What is a goal you have accomplished as a Husker?
I've been lucky to achieve a lot of things as a Husker. I've been fortunate enough to make regular appearances on the Dean's List, as well as explore new areas of math I've never gotten to learn about before!
What do you wish you would have known when you started as a Math Major that you know now?
I wish I would have known how friendly, welcoming, and helpful the faculty within the Math department is. I've loved my instructors, and the grad students definitely make you feel at home! Don't be afraid to reach out for help, you might end up making some awesome connections! Also, don't forget about our wonderful advisor Doug!
What do you hope to cross off your “bucket list” in the next few years?
I have a few big ticket items on my bucket list that I'll be gunning for over the next few years. I really want to visit Iceland, go back to Nepal, and hopefully trek Mt. Kilimanjaro in the future!
