Join Math Club!

Math Club is a student organization that represents all mathematics majors and other students passionate about this subject. We organize many mathematics-related events open to the public. If you have done so in the past, please consider joining and participating in the Math Club. The Math Club hosts many events through the Academic Year, and Dr. Alexandra Seceleanu, the Math Club Faculty Advisor, keeps the Math Club website up-to-date with exciting new happenings. This year's first event will be a presentation by Dr. Alex Zupan on Knot Theory. Dr. Zupan's presentation will be on Thursday, August 30 from 5:00-6:00 PM in 351 Avery Hall. For more information, please contact Dr. Zupan (zupan@unl.edu) or Dr. Seceleanu (asceleanu@unl.edu).

The most popular event each semester is the Advanced Math course preview where the professors teaching next semester's Advanced Math courses come to connect with Math Club. A list of upcoming events can be found here.

Leadership Opportunities!

Dr. Seceleanu already sent out an email notice asking for interested students to contact her about becoming Math Club officers. Becoming a Math Club officer will allow you to have input on our next events and possibly help to organize info sessions, social mixers, or game nights. Being an officer in a student organization also gives you experience with working with people, which can be a helpful addition to any resume.

Pi Mu Epsilon

Pi Mu Epsilon is an honorary mathematics society that invites students to become members regardless of major. The Nebraska Alpha Chapter inducts new members each fall. Pi Mu Epsilon is a non-secret organization whose purpose is the promotion of scholarly activity in mathematics among students in academic institutions, and among the staffs of qualified non-academic institutions. It aims to do this by:

1. electing members on an honorary basis according to their proficiency in mathematics,

2. by engaging in activities designed to promote the mathematical and scholarly development of its members, and

3. by taking any other measures that will further the purpose stated above.

Participation in Math Club will give you more information about Pi Mu Epsilon and could help you become a member!

Other Opportunities

Members of Math Club are often involved with Department of Mathematics events such as the Career Perspectives in Mathematics Lecture Series and the Pi Mu Epsilon Lecture Series. Members of the Math Club also support the Women Undergraduates in Mathematics at Nebraska (WUMN) group, which currently does not hold separate meetings. For more information about WUMN, please visit https://www.math.unl.edu/math-club/wumn.

Participation in Math Club and other Department of Mathematics events can also improve your chances of being awarded a Department of Mathematics Scholarship!

If you have any questions about Math Club, please contact Dr. Alexandra Seceleanu (aseceleanu@unl.edu, 338 Avery Hall).
