Hello Math Majors,

With the Thanksgiving holiday in the review mirror, there is only 2 weeks of classes left before final exams. I know how busy you are likely going to be during these last two weeks of class, so I want you to remember two things. First, make sure that you managing your time wisely. If you have been working on a specific schedule all semester, try to continue to stick with it. While you may need extra time to study for an exam or to finish a paper, be sure that you aren't sacrificing sleep, breaks, or meals during this time. Second, try not to cram for your remaining exams and final exams. It is best to study things in pieces over time. For example, if your class had 4 unit or midterm exams, study the material from exam 1 the first night, exam 2 the second night, exam 3 the third night, exam 4 the fourth night, and bring all together on the fifth and final night before the exam. Alternatively, spend time highlighting the most important material from each of the midterm exams for a couple of days. Then, repeatedly study that material for three to four days before the exam. Repetition is much better for memory and long term learning/understanding than cramming the night before. Also, a good night sleep can be much better for memory than pulling an all nighter right before the exam.

If you still haven't setup your class schedule for the Spring 2019 semester, please come see me to discuss what you should be taking for classes. If you have a hold on your registration, I would be happy to discuss how to get the hold removed. My advising hours are below, and I am often available during student holidays. For example, the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and the week between final exams and Christmas are student holidays. However, none of these days are work holidays for me or other University staff. If you are available and want to meet, I would be more than happy to see you and help you.

Thanks,
Doug
