2021 Hollings Preparation Program (HPP)

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) seeks to prepare students for career development opportunities in atmospheric and ocean sciences. NOAA aims to support a diverse and qualified pool of applicants, particularly from underrepresented groups*. The Hollings Preparation Program (HPP) will prepare undergraduate freshmen to be competitive applicants for the full NOAA Hollings Scholarship in their sophomore year of college. Successful HPP applicants will be paired with NOAA mentors primarily on the West Coast, including California, Oregon, Washington, Hawaii, and Alaska, for four to six weeks during the summer of 2021**. More information about NOAA can be found at https://www.noaa.gov.

What’s in it for you?

• In-person or remote office, field or laboratory project
• $500 scholarship and $4,000 stipend
• Training in NOAA-related topics and career development
• Assistance in applying for the full Hollings Scholarship in fall 2021.

Details and how to apply:

• Apply by sending a cover letter and resume to: hollingsprep.wcr@noaa.gov by March 15, 2021
• Successful applicants may be asked to provide proof of U.S. citizenship, health insurance***, and High School GPA prior to beginning their internship.
• Your application should highlight how your academic and career goals align with NOAA and how this opportunity will help you achieve those goals. Cover letters should be one page and clearly written. Because HPP internships do not include travel or housing costs****, the cover letter should indicate the city where you will be living during the summer. Also indicate if you are open to a remote or virtual internship.
• Students who subsequently apply and are accepted into the full Hollings Scholarship Program will participate in a 10-week internship at a NOAA office (opportunities available nation-wide) in summer 2023, and travel to Washington D.C. in August 2023.

*Underrepresented groups include: American Indian, Alaskan Native, Black, Hispanic, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander. It is not necessary to be from an underrepresented group to qualify and be selected for this internship.

** Additional NOAA Offices that are not on the West Coast may be chosen based on mentor availability.

***Government sponsored healthcare programs qualify

**** Some exceptions may be possible at the discretion of the Office of Education based on circumstances (e.g., mentors are available in remote locations).
