NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Information Positions
NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) has opened two physical scientist positions in its Climatic Science and Services Division, Climatic Science & Development Branch. These positions are all classified as Physical Scientist at the ZP-1301-02 level (equivalent to GS-07/09), with promotion potential to ZP-1301-03 (equivalent to GS-11/12). These positions are located in Asheville, NC.
The responsibilities of these positions include the following:
• Participate in the acquisition of environmental data, particularly meteorological observations collected by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), academia and partner agencies.
• Assist higher-level specialists in the development of new techniques and approaches to solve problems, particularly those pertaining to the development and analysis of U.S. and global climate data records.
• Assist in providing support for data access including putting data into new formats, developing new access tools, writing documentation, supporting operational readiness activities, and ensuring the quality and usefulness of the data for projects and customers.
• Serve as point of contact for international and national environmental data providers and users. Work to verify data quality, ensure that datasets meet data requirements of NCEI and its customers, and stay abreast of best practices and technological advances.

Read the posting carefully. You do not necessarily need graduate coursework to be eligible to apply. You are also eligible if you have the following in addition to your BS degree:
One-year of specialized experience* that includes the following:
• Writing computer programs to process, validate, analyze, distribute, or visualize environmental data;
• Working with meteorological observations from in-situ instruments, satellites, or proxy records; and
• Communicating processing steps and results in oral and written form.
*Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations e.g., professional; philanthropic, religious; spiritual; community, student, social). This may also include research experience.
Superior academic achievement may be a substitute for specialized experience: A grade point average (GPA) of 2.9 or higher based on a 4.0 scale for all completed undergraduate courses, or those completed in the last 2 full years of undergraduate study.
