Volunteer for Dinosaurs and Disasters (D&D)

Hi all,

It’s that time of year again to start planning for the 19th Annual Dinosaurs and Disasters (D&D) which will be held on February 5, 2022. In years past, I have worked together with the METR-CLIM students that are interested in helping out with D&D. This will be an in-person event held at Morrill Hall with pandemic precautions in place:

• In-person but scaled back quality stations (3-4 stations per floor).
• There would be timed tickets to limit the number of people in the building.
• Depending on COVID, masks will likely be mandatory.

If you are interested in volunteering for this event, I would ask that you please take a few minutes to do the following by Tuesday, November 23rd:

1. If you are interested in volunteering, please add your name to the bottom of this spreadsheet where it says “Volunteers without a station”:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1l8IhKqGJhMA_aR64vPYTDsyoKHh4YfJmJ-Lpbx3-GFM/edit?usp=sharing.

2. Please suggest station ideas to me at dawn.kopacz@unl.edu. The theme will be “Mythbusters”. Each station will include a demo or activity that will help visitors determine whether a common or interesting myth about our science will be ‘confirmed,’ ‘busted,’ or ‘deemed possible’. A handout that was provided to museum visitor's the last time this theme was used is available here to help spark some ideas.

Based on the responses, we can decide on how many stations to develop and I will work with interested students to begin the planning process. There will be a small time commitment as we plan/prepare the stations, but mostly we are looking for people to show up on the day of the event and volunteer their time (event usually runs from 9am – 4pm). Lunch and breaks are provided and the museum usually offers a small gift as a thank you to the volunteers. This is a great volunteer/science outreach activity to add to a resume.

Let me know if you have any questions, and thank you!
