Paid student positions available for this summer's TORUS (Targeted Observation by Radars and UAS of Supercells) project

Dr. Houston is looking for 2-3 additional students to participate in this summer’s TORUS (Targeted Observation by Radars and UAS of Supercells) project. Here’s the relevant information.

TORUS is a multi-institution field project led by UNL (more information on TORUS can be found at https://torus.unl.edu). Paid positions are open for interested students. The details relevant to student participants are as follows:
• Operations window: 14 May – 18 June 2022 - We probably won’t be out in the field during this entire time, but students need to be able to commit to the entire operations window.
• Participants will receive a stipend of $3,000.
• Your food and lodging expenses will also be covered. - If we return to Lincoln during the operations window, lodging will not be covered.

Students will take part in a range of activities associated with the project. Possible responsibilities include:
• Driving UNL vehicles
• Navigating
• Meteorological situational awareness
• Forecasting

Importantly, even if driving is not your primary responsibility during intensive operations periods, all students must be willing and able to drive at some point during the campaign.

Prior experience participating in atmospheric science field campaigns is not required but will be considered in the review. Students with experience recreationally chasing storms are preferred.

If you’re interested, please respond to Dr. Houston (ahouston2@unl.edu) by Wednesday, April 13 with the following information:
• Name
• Degree currently being pursued at UNL
• Current GPA
• Anticipated date of graduation
• Are you able and willing to drive a UNL vehicle during the project?
• Have you participated in prior atmospheric science field work? If so, describe this experience.
• Have you participated in recreational storm chasing? If so, please describe your level of experience.
• Please list any extracurricular leadership positions you’ve held. (Freshmen are welcome to include positions held in their senior year of high school.)

Thanks,
Dr. Houston
