Objective: The program is aimed at providing graduate student research experience in the science, technology, and engineering areas that support Sandia National Laboratories’ (SNL) seven Research Foundations. Sandia has as its mission “To render exceptional service in the national interest” as one of the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) national laboratories. As a DOE National Nuclear Security Administration laboratory, Sandia has a core mission in national security that is synergistically served by science, technology, and engineering across a broad range of disciplines in its Research Foundations.
Program Description: Summer Fellows will work in close collaboration with Sandia’s technical staff members to engage in challenging research and development projects. They will also be included in meetings, events, and tours sponsored by the SNL Student Intern Program, SNL Academic Programs, and by URA aimed at aiding in professional development and support of engagement among the Fellows.
Eligibility: Applicants must be full-time graduate students pursuing masters or doctoral degrees.
Selection: Summer Fellows will be selected from applications received by the application deadline, most likely one each per Research Foundation, will receive a stipend, and will participate in the defined research of the hosting organization. Diverse students and those from underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply. Selection will be made by URA and the hosting Research Foundations and will be based on evaluation of the application statement, transcripts, and expressed interests.
Stipend and inbound/outbound travel: The stipend will be based on 3 months (12 weeks, 40 hours/week) at $33.36/hour for those with a bachelor’s degree and less than two years in graduate school as of May 2022 and $36.40/hour for those with two years or more of graduate school as of May 2022. Medical or other employment benefits are not provided. Up to a total of $2,000 will be provided in reimbursement for inbound/outbound travel expenses. Information regarding housing, on-boarding, and other logistics will be provided to the applicants selected.

Deadline to apply: Applications must be received by midnight MST on March 15, 2022. Late applications will be considered only if any of the seven Research Foundation openings remains unfilled after all applications received by the deadline are considered.
Appointment dates: The selected Summer Fellows should start work at the SNL Albuquerque site on dates negotiated with the SNL sponsor organization beginning in May 2022 and ending in August 2022 to encompass 12 weeks, accommodating the end of spring 2022 semester and beginning fall 2022 semester.
