Microbial Genetics & Genomics
Semester: Fall 2022
Course #: PLPT 418 / MBIO 418
Credit hours: 3
Course Format: Lecture (also include student project and
presentation).
Teaching Materials: A mixture of textbook (Molecular Genetics of
Bacteria by L Snyder and W Champness, ASM Press) and literature.

Time: T R 12:30 pm – 1:45pm
Location: Beadle N177
Instructor: Dr. Lirong Zeng
Course Overview: Microbial Genetics & Genomics is the study of the
mechanisms of heritable information in microorganisms and
fundamentals of prokaryotic genomics. It deals with the transmission of
heritable traits by microbes and the methods and principles used to study
heredity and mutations. Topics will include the genetics of bacteriophages
and bacteria; mutation and evolution; mechanisms of gene transfer, gene
regulation and adaptive responses; use of genomic data, including
concepts and strategies of genome sequencing and sequence
annotation, analysis and databases; analysis of gene expression using
the latest genomic tools, such as RNA-seq.
Learning Objectives: This course intends to help students: 1)
understand differences among the three domains of life and
bacteriophages in replication, transcription, translation, and transfer of
genetic information; 2) identify how these processes and other external
and internal molecular cue and/or signals impact genetic variation; 3)
gain insights into differences in regulatory mechanisms, mechanisms of
inheritance, and tools used to study and manipulate genomes to alter cell
function in microorganisms; and 4) obtain experience in reading and
summarizing scientific publications about microbial genetics and
genomics using critical thinking .
