Microbial Functions Exerted by Interspecies Interactions: Learning from Thermophilic Microbial Communities in Hot Springs

This seminar presents various fascination aspects of microbe-microbe
interactions in microbial communities at terrestrial hot springs.
Photosynthesis-driven thermophilic microbial communities form colorful matlike biofabrics (microbial mats) in hot spring waters. The thermophilic
communities are valuable sources to explore novel microbes and microbial
functions determined by interspecies interactions. We found that invasive
interactions help to construct the mats and inhibitory chemicals are effective mediators for metabolic interactions. These findings lead us to discuss how microbe-microbe interactions govern microbial ecosystems.
