Open position to work on a funded UCARE project in the Fungal Ecology Lab at UNL. The Fungal Ecology Lab is seeking motivated undergraduate student workers to join our research team for a funded UCARE project focused on a significant potato fungal pathogen. This is a fantastic opportunity to gain hands-on experience in fungal ecology, laboratory techniques, and fieldwork while contributing to important agricultural research. The project is focused on genetic
characterization of the Potato Black Dot Pathogen, Colletotrichum coccodes, in Nebraska. The objectives of the project are to determine the genetic variation of the pathogen populations across the state and determine levels of pathogenicity across potato cultivars.
Position Details:
Title: Undergraduate Student Research Assistant
Location: Department of Plant Pathology, 406 Plant Sciences Hall, East Campus
Duration: Fall 2024 and Spring 2025
Compensation: $3,600 stipend in sixteen paydays
Responsibilities:
• Assist with laboratory experiments and data collection.
• Participate in field sampling and/or monitoring of potato crops.
• Help with the preparation and maintenance of fungal cultures.
• Analyze data and prepare reports/presentations under the supervision of lab staff.
• Collaborate with team members on various aspects of the research project.
Qualifications:
• Currently enrolled as an undergraduate student, preferably in biology, environmental
science, agricultural sciences, or a related field. All majors will be considered.
• Strong interest in ecology, mycology, and/or plant pathology.
• Willingness to work in both lab and field settings, including potentially outdoor work.
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
• Prior experience with laboratory techniques is a plus but not required.
