FREN 460/860: Exile & Migration in the Francosphere
Dr. Julia Frengs
TR 2:00-3:15 | ACE 10
In “Exile and Migration in the Francosphere,” students will learn about the experiences of immigrants, of migrants, of those in (forced or chosen) exile, and about displacement in the context of the Francosphere in order to inform contemporary discussions around this relevant and timely topic. This course will enable students to engage in the international dialogue about migration, exile, and displacement, expanding the scope of the areas examined to include not only France, but also the Indian Ocean, Canada, sub-Saharan Africa, Oceania, and the Caribbean. The focus will be on narratives of exile and migration (viewed broadly to include various forms of storytelling, such as film and short stories, graphic novels, as well as novel-length works), and will include invited speakers. In addition to the more “traditional” phenomena relating to migration and exile (i.e. political asylum seekers, those fleeing war-wrought areas, colonial-related migration) the course also includes the ultra-contemporary topic of climate migration and climate refugees. Taught in French.
