How did the concepts of love and death shape people’s lives from the Middle Ages to the seventeenth century? In this course, we will consider both the “everyday” varieties of how people expected (and were expected) to love and die, as well as a variety of scandals, taboos, and intrigues that sometimes made honorable—or even “normal”—love and death impossible. In addition to exploring the cultural context of this complex set of centuries, we will explore the political, social, and cultural implications of what it meant to love -- and die -- in medieval and early modern France, as well as what traces of this world remain present today.
