FREN 491: Practical Translation
Meets: MWF 1:30-2:20pm
Instructor: Dr. Jordan Stump

Translation is one of the most useful things one can do with language, and one of the most exhilarating, and often one of the most difficult. It's also a remarkably effective way of learning a language, and also a tremendous game. All through your French classes you've been told not to translate, to "think in French" -- now's your chance to disobey that rule!

This will be a course on practical translation (not to be confused with FREN 406, which deals with literary translation). We'll translate newspaper articles, owner's manuals, and advertisements from French to English and vice-versa, all the while discussing the linguistic, cultural, and stylistic questions they raise.
