The Evening of Choirs performance will feature the Varsity Chorus, the University Chorale and the Chamber Singers from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Glenn Korff School of Music on Tuesday, October 15 at 7:30 p.m. in Kimball Recital Hall.
The evening’s concert will feature a mix of standard repertoire from our steadfast choral composers. In addition to songs by Michael East (How merrily we live) and Felix Mendelssohn (Lift Thine Eyes), University Chorale will perform a hauntingly beautiful setting of the anonymous Jewish poem that begins with the text “I believe in the sun even when it’s not shining.” Chamber Singers will feature standard, sacred music from the Renaissance by Victoria (O magnum mysterium), Tallis (If ye love me), and Byrd (Kyrie from Mass for Four Voices) as well as an imitative contemporary set of psalm settings by AfricanAmerican composer Ulysses Kay titled “A New Song.”
The choirs will combine at the end to perform the final movement of André Thomas’s mass in preparation for the Intercollegiate Choral Festival in November
When the Varsity Chorus gathers on stage, it’s much more than a concert. It’s an event! One that leaves the audience spellbound and wanting more. These enthusiastic singers achieve a rich and full sound, and their repertoire is unique and varied. While focusing primarily on music of the standard male chorus repertoire, they also bring new literature into this musical idiom with interesting new commissions and exciting multi-cultural works.
University Chorale is a women’s vocal ensemble that performs a varied repertoire of soprano/alto literature. Through the study and performance of diverse musical expressions that represent a variety of historical and cultural perspectives, students participating in University Chorale develop the knowledge, skills, interests, values, and attitudes associated with individual and ensemble musicianship and artistry.
The Chamber Singers is a small choir of 14-18 voices, and is intended to provide the highest level of choral chamber-specific performance experience for graduate and undergraduate singers. The ensemble is open to all majors. The choir explores a broad range of repertoire specializing in literature for unaccompanied and contemporary small vocal chamber ensembles including works from early music eras as well as contemporary literature.
