The University of Nebraska-Lincoln Glenn Korff School of Music Big Band and the UNL Grad Jazz Combo will perform on December 5 at 7:30 p.m. in Kimball Recital Hall.
The UNL Big Band, directed by Susumu Watanabe, will perform the Mostly Gershwin Program including “Summertime” from his opera “Porgy and Bess” and “But Not For Me” arranged by a renowned jazz saxophonist, composer, band leader Bob Mintzer. Besides the music selection of Gershwin, “Speak Low” written by another leading stage composer, Kurt Weill, will be performed.
The UNL Grad Jazz Combo will perform six pieces, including four by current Glenn Korff School of Music students. The night will close with a Fats Waller piece, Honeysuckle Rose.
Big Band is a vital component of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln jazz curriculum. Through intensive rehearsal and performance, students are encouraged to develop and nurture the fundamental skills necessary to perform a wide variety of repertoire and to engage in the creative process through improvisation. UNL Big Band is specifically designed to motivate and inform music educators and aspiring teachers through innovative programming and pedagogical methods.
The Grad Jazz Combo is made up of graduate students in the Glenn Korff School of Music.
