The UNL Glenn Korff School of Music is proud to present the 10th annual Celebration of American Song at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, January 27 in Kimball Recital Hall. This year's celebration honors Sheldon Harnick.
As both a lyricist and a composer, Harnick wrote lyrics for twenty-nine Broadway musicals and has contributed over 200 songs to the great American songbook. His songs provided early hits for young actors Barbara Cook, Jack Cassidy, Bea Arthur (later known for her work in Maude & The Golden Girls), Tom Bosley (best known as the father on Happy Days) and more recently revival hits for Broadway stars Kate Baldwin, Kristin Chenoweth, Alfred Molina and so many others.
UNL's voice faculty, alumni and students will present live performances of Harnick's songs, ranging from the rousing "If I were a rich man" and the poignant "Sunrise sunset" to the jubilation of "She loves me!" Coordinator of Musical Theatre Studies Alisa Belflower will serve as your host narrating with anecdotes from Sheldon Harnick's colorful life and career as a composer, a lyricist, and a librettist translating famous opera libretti into English at Beverly Sills' request.
Come out and discover the composer of American standards that continue to stir the hearts of contemporary audiences a half century after wowing us with the music written for his iconic musicals including Tony Award-winners Fiddler on the Roof, She Loves Me and his Pulitzer Prize-winning musical Fiorello!.
