University of Nebraska-Lincoln Glenn Korff School of Music faculty members Karen Becker, cello, Kate Butler, mezzo-soprano and Susan Levine Ourada, dance; with Michael Cotton, piano and UNL and SLOdance dancers will present Seed of Dream and Other Visions, A Holocaust Remembrance Recital, on Sunday, May 4 at 7:30 p.m. in Kimball Recital Hall.
The performance will include From Jewish Life by Ernest Bloch; Quatuor pour la fin du temps (the fifth movement) by Olivier Messiaen; Elegy and Vision for Solo Cello by Laurence Sherr and The Seed of Dream by Lori Laitman, a song cycle for mezzo, cello and piano.
The title, and the music, (of Elegy and Vision) are intended to convey feelings of mourning as well as a sense of resolution and hope. It is a tribute, in part, to all who perished in the Holocaust, according to the composer. Also, the Messiaen was composed and performed while the composer was in a concentration camp.
The Seed of Dream sets several poems of the Vilna Ghetto survivor Abraham Sutzkever, who consistently produced poems of great artistry under the most dire of circumstances. These first-hand accounts, written between 1941 and 1944, not only bear witness to the destruction around him but to his undying belief in the beauty of the word and the world. The Seed of Dream was commissioned by Music of Remembrance and had its premier performance in 2005 at the Holocaust Remembrance Concert in Seattle, WA.
Tickets are General Admission $5; Students/Seniors $3.
