Moran Woodwind Quintet

The Moran Woodwind Quintet, faculty quintet at UNL’s Glenn Korff School of Music, will give a program of standards and colorful lesser-known works on Tuesday, April 12 in UNL’s Westbrook Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m.

On the program are two works by contemporary Mexican composers Mario Lavista and Arturo Márquez, both inspired by Latin dance rhythms. Also on the program are the lush, late-Romantic, four-movement Serenade by Austrian composer and Karl Pilss and the melodious and beautifully crafted Suite, a staple of the quintet repertoire, by turn-of the-century Paris Conservatory composer Charles Lefebvre. The program opens with a transcription of Bach’s fugue in g minor, transcribed for quintet by bassoonist Mordechai Rechtman.

One of the most active and visible quintets in the Midwest, the Moran Woodwind Quintet is the resident faculty woodwind quintet of the Glenn Korff School of Music. Formed in 1986 and named for the late John Moran, former director of the UNL School of Music, the Quintet has toured extensively. They have also performed at conventions of the College Music Society, the International Double Reed Society and the International Horn Society. They have recorded three CD’s. The Quintet includes John Bailey on flute, Diane Barger on clarinet, Alan Mattingly on horn, Jeffrey McCray on bassoon and William McMullen on oboe.

The performance is free and open to the public. This performance will be live webcast: http://arts.unl.edu/music/webcasts.
