On September 8, 2017, the Nebraska State Board of Education approved new state science standards: “Nebraska College and Career-ready Standards for Science” (NESS). The new standards, which are updated every 5 years, represent a collaborative effort between more than 90 faculty members from the University of Nebraska's four campuses, the Nebraska Department of Education and K-12 staff members.

NESS aligns well with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and for the first time, the state standards include specific references to climate change.
