It’s a no brainer that you should always be prepared for illnesses, especially during cold and flu season. Chances are likely you or a roommate will get sick in the fall and winter months, even if it’s just the common cold. Is your medicine cabinet well stocked?

Here are a few over-the-counter items the University Health Center pharmacists recommend keeping handy so that you’re prepared at the first sneeze:

• Cough and cold medications
• Pain relievers such as acetaminophen and ibuprofen
• Throat lozenges
• Thermometer
• Decongestants
• Nasal saline wash or spray
• Allergy medications
• Tissues
• Hand sanitizer

If you’re running low on any of these items, the health center pharmacy can help. They offer free cold care kits and 24 hour doses of ibuprofen, acetaminophen and antacid. Most other over-the-counter products are less than $5. They can also fill prescriptions and help you safely dispose of unused or unwanted medications.
