The priority deadline for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is April 1, 2020—here’s what you need to know about the FAFSA and why you should file soon.

The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) application is available online at fafsa.gov and is your key to need-based financial aid like grants, loans and scholarships. You need to file the FAFSA every year, so file yours FAFSA before the April 1, 2020 priority deadline.

Everyone is encouraged to file the FAFSA—even if you don't think you are eligible. Most Huskers receive at least one type of need-based financial aid after they file their FAFSA.

If you’re busy today, consider completing the FAFSA when you're home this weekend, or during spring break. At home, you’ll likely have access to your parents’ information and all of the paperwork needed to complete the FAFSA.

Here’s how to get started:
• If you’re filing the FAFSA for the first time, create an FSA ID at go.unl.edu/fsa-id. Students and parents (of dependent students) are required to use an FSA ID to confirm identity when accessing financial aid information and electronically signing federal student aid documents. If you’re refiling the FAFSA, use the FSA ID you already created.
• Gather the documents needed. The FAFSA asks for information about you, your financial situation and your parent, if you’re a dependent. Visit go.unl.edu/fafsa-docs for a list of information or documents you might need.

If you have questions when filing the FAFSA, student services specialists at Husker Hub are available to help—no appointment necessary. Husker Hub is open Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. at 130 Louise Pound Hall or at huskerhub@unl.edu or 402-472-2030—conveniently located on city campus, just east of the Sheldon Art Museum and west of Love Library.
