We know what you’re thinking—If I’m a healthy young adult, why should I waste my time, money and energy getting a physical?

The Truth

  • It typically costs little to nothing as it is covered by most health insurance plans.
  • It’s actually a quick appointment, and even more convenient since you can get it done right on campus at the University Health Center.
  • An annual physical is self-care meant to keep you healthy so that you can achieve your social, academic and career goals.

What happens in your college years has a profound and long-lasting impact on your future life. For your overall health, safety and well-being, it’s important to maintain those annual physicals with a health care provider.

The benefits

Physicals give you a snapshot of your overall health. Specifically, it’s an opportunity to:

  • Review your current habits with a professional and learn evidence-based tips for living a healthier life
  • Catch warning signs of potential diseases through screenings and tests
  • Get up to date on your immunizations that protect you from diseases college age students are at higher risk of contracting, like meningitis, HPV, etc.
  • Review your family medical history and understand your risk for certain diseases and illnesses

Bonus: Scheduling a physical at the health center is a great way to practice accessing health care on your own, without parental assistance and in a safe and understanding environment. It’s valuable real-world experience that will prepare you for the future.

Know Before You Go

  • Appointments are required. To schedule at the health center, call 402.472.5000.
  • Talk to your parents about your family medical history. You’ll need this information when you fill out the medical history form. Also, if you don’t have your vaccination records, ask them to help you track them down.
  • Prepare yourself to make the most of your conversation with the provider. Write down your questions in advance and bring them to your appointment. Not sure what to ask? Consider these:

    • How’s my BMI?
    • Are there any vaccinations I should consider getting?
    • Are there any diseases I’m at risk for? What steps can I take now to reduce my risk?
    • Is there any routine testing or lab work I should consider?
    • Is what I read about XYZ health topic on social media true?

  • Be ready to be open and honest about all aspects of your health. This includes your alcohol and drug use, sex life and your mental well-being. It may feel awkward to discuss these topics with someone you’ve just met, but your provider will not judge you and your answers will help them provide the care you truly need.
