The University Health Center is pleased to announce the addition of Dr. Stephanie Sutton to its team of psychiatric health care providers. Take a moment to get to know her as we welcome her to campus.

Name: Stephanie Sutton, MD

Hometown: Lincoln, Nebraska

Education: I completed my undergraduate degree at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, medical school at UNMC and my residency at a joint psychiatry program with UNMC and Creighton.

Areas of interest: I specialize in depression and anxiety, including general anxiety, social anxiety and major depressive disorder. I am also interested in lifestyle medicine – connecting mental health with diet, exercise and good sleep habits.

How did you fall in love with your field: I became interested in psychiatry through my studies during my third year in medical school. I fell in love with student mental health in particular when I started my first job working at Creighton University Health Services. During college, it’s common to experience life stressors and transitional changes that can cause mental health concerns. I am passionate about helping students navigate these concerns and care for their well-being so that they can become their best selves.

Words of advice for students who are interested in making a psychiatry appointment: I understand that it can be intimidating to see a new psychiatric provider and talk through different mental health topics. Please know that I am a kind, patient and accepting person and will do everything I can to put you at ease.

Hobbies outside of work: I enjoy traveling, cooking and exercising. I have done hiking trips in countries such as Peru, Chile, and Italy. I also love visiting art museums in Europe. I have run three half marathons, and my first one was the Lincoln Half Marathon while a senior at UNL. I grow herbs in my backyard and enjoy cooking with seasonal ingredients.

Interesting fact that people may not know about you: I do not have a middle name.

If you currently see a psychiatrist back home or in the community and would like to transition care to Dr. Sutton, call 402.472.5000.

If you are new to psychiatric services or are uncertain if this type of care is needed, please schedule an appointment with a Counseling and Psychological Services therapist. The therapist will assess the situation. If a psychiatric evaluation is recommended, the therapist will assist you in making an appointment with Dr. Sutton or another member of the health center psychiatry team. Best practices have shown that therapy combined with medication management prove to have the most positive outcomes in treating mental health disorders. Therefore, we recommend therapy with CAPS or a therapist in the community along with our medication management services in order to provide you with the best treatment possible.
