Be Bold: Volunteer for Husker Dialogues and take a step toward inclusive excellence

The University of Nebraska–Lincoln community has the opportunity to take a bold step and become a Husker Dialogues 2022 volunteer.

The Husker Dialogues planning committee seeks student leaders, faculty, and staff to serve in various roles to help make the 2022 program a success. Hosted by the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, Husker Dialogues is an event that introduces incoming first-year students to tools to engage in meaningful conversations centered on diversity to create an inclusive campus community.

“Husker Dialogues was created to be a transformative experience for our first-year students. By participating our students can learn about the importance of talking to others, perhaps, someone who may be different from them, said Charlie Foster, Assistant Vice Chancellor for Inclusive Student Excellence and Chair for Husker Dialogues. “Refining our student’s communication skills make them better prepared to work in the global community where they will be in contact with people who live, love, and experience the world differently.”

Held annually, Husker Dialogues is the largest event (aside from athletics) that brings the university’s student body together.

“The conversations between peers are powerful. Our Husker Dialogue volunteers, especially the older student volunteers, model for first-year students how they can address differences in a polite, respectful and empathetic manner. The students learn that they can use communication to better each interaction and in a way that betters the UNL campus,” Foster noted.

This year’s event will be held multiple nights starting on Sept. 6. Students, faculty, and staff lead the experience, serving in many roles, from logistics to student experience. The greatest current need is for conversation guides. The position helps facilitate the discussion between the participants, which is a crucial part of the event.

Current students, faculty, and staff can apply online to become a Husker Dialogues volunteer through August 19.
