Cooking classes put new twist on classic meals

The Wellness Kitchen is the perfect environment to learn to cook or expand your skills. The state-of-the-art kitchen is located inside the Rec & Wellness Center on East Campus and frequently hosts classes by its on-staff Registered Dietitian and Dietetic Interns. Classes are open to the public and can accommodate all special dietary needs. The first four classes this fall include:

BEAT THE HEAT: CHIPOTLE SHRIMP TACOS W/ CILANTRO-LIME CREMA

Sweet, plump shrimp are a delicious addition to a spicy taco. In this one-hour demonstration, our knowledgeable instructor will show you how to properly devein and cook shrimp, an easy way to cut an avocado and how to put it all together in a delicious meal of Chipotle Shrimp Tacos with Cilantro-Lime Crema. We'll give new life to your at-home creations and you'll enjoy a delicious meal at the end of the demonstration.

BREAKFAST CLUB: HEALTHY HOMEMADE GRANOLA + OVERNIGHT OATS

Breakfast gives you energy to start a new day and is linked to many health benefits, including weight control and improved performance. But, in our rush to get out the door in the morning, we often skip it! In this breakfast bootcamp, you'll learn how to create a yummy homemade granola and plan out your breakfast for the week, including overnight oats and plenty of juicy fruit. We'll also review how to read nutrition labels to find ways to lower the amount of added sugar in our diet. You'll take home a jar of overnight oats to enjoy for breakfast the next morning.

PARENT + KID COOKING: CLASSIC FRENCH TOAST + FRUIT & YOGURT PARFAITS

Join us on Family Health & Fitness Day to learn a breakfast classic that's good any time of day! Parents and kids work together to create this yummy dish and learn basics like cracking an egg, using the skillet to make French toast and simple steps to a delicious fruit parfait they'll love.

MAKE + TAKE LUNCH: SKILLET CHICKEN FAJITA
Fri., Sept. 28 | 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. | $5/person

Drop in over lunch to make a healthy, homemade meal. We'll lead you through cooking veggies on the stove top, cooking meat safely and how to plan for a quick lunch. After our brief cooking session, sit down to enjoy your lunch in the Wellness Kitchen or grab it and go! This lunch will fill you up so you won't be craving that unhealthy snack later in the day.
