'Lift Like a Girl' helps women be more comfortable in the weight room.

Lift Like a Girl is a free event that helps women be more comfortable with free weights, machine weights and creating workouts. This year’s event is held 3-5 p.m. Thurs., Sept. 20 in the Strength Training & Conditioning Room at the Campus Rec Center and is free for UNL students and Campus Rec Members. General Public must pay a $10 facility fee. More than 675 females have been empowered to strength train through hands-on training and education at this annual for-women, by-women event.

Participants can choose a different session led by female Campus Recreation staff during each 25-minute time slot, but do not need to attend the entire event. Offerings range from beginner to intermediate level. Giveaways are also available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Lift Like a Girl is part of Campus Recreation’s ongoing efforts to be an advocate for lifelong wellness. It was first launched four years ago under its former name, Purely Pink and has evolved each year to better meet the needs of females in the UNL community. New this year is a special drop-in session featuring a warm-up and foam rolling.

25-minute sessions include:

– Build Your Own Workout –
• How often should I lift?
• What types of movements should I include?
• How do I structure my workout based on my goals?
Are these questions in your head? We’re here to help! This session covers everything from exercise selection and order to rep and set ranges. Bring any questions you may have!

– Training w/ Free Weights –
Curious about what types of exercises you can do with free weights? This session explores several lower and upper body movements that you can use in your workout routine. Emphasis will be on correct form so this is a great class for beginners!

– Fuel Your Workout –
Discover the best foods pre- and post-workout, and everything in between. Our nutrition team walks you through two post-workout recipes proven to help refuel and recover after your workout. Session includes recipe cards and tasting.

– HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) –
Learn how to use medicine balls, resistance bands, and kettlebells in this high intensity interval workout session. We alternate cardiovascular movements with strength movements to provide a fun, total body workout!

– Six Fundamental Movement Patterns –
In this workout session, we explore the six different movement patterns you should incorporate into your daily workout routine:
• push
• pull
• squat
• bent and lift
• rotational
• single leg movements
We will use lots of different types of equipment, so you can learn how to use these moves to be most efficient.

– Warm-Up/Foam Rolling –
Stiffness, inflexibility and a decrease in mobility can be cured with foam rolling and a proper dynamic warm-up. With an increase in blood flow, body temperature, and an elevated heart rate, your body becomes better prepared for physical activity. A dynamic warm-up includes these three components:
• aerobic
• stretching
• sports-specific
Together, this combination sets a powerful platform to help you have a better workout and reduce post-workout delayed-onset muscle soreness!
