Free or Low-Cost Bike Classes, Rides Offered this Fall

In an effort to promote safe bicycle riding and foster community among cyclists, UNL Campus Recreation will offer several free and low-cost bicycle opportunities for UNL students and the UNL community this Fall.

ICE CREAM RIDES
Ice cream rides are fun, casual rides for students to get to know each other and learn more about bicycling in Lincoln and the Outdoor Adventures program. Students meet at the Outdoor Adventure Center and ride to a local ice cream shop for a free treat. Bike helmet and bike rental are included, but space is limited so participants are encouraged to register early. Students are allowed to enroll in one free ride per semester. Remaining dates for this Fall are:
• Sept. 4 | 5:30-7:30 p.m.
• Sept. 11 | 5:30-7:30 p.m.

BIKE COMMUTER SKILLS
Participants will learn how to use a bicycle with confidence and competence for pleasure, utility and sport under various highway, climate, terrain and traffic conditions. Class time is spent on the bike doing drills to build bike handling skills and riding on the street as a part of traffic. Participants should pass an online test prior to class start. Classes meet at the Outdoor Adventures and are free for UNL students and Campus Rec members thanks to a grant from the Parent's Association. Fees are $30 for General Public. Two Smart Cycling classes are offered this fall:
• Sept. 10 | 4:30-8 p.m.
• Sept. 17 | 5-8:30 p.m.

PLATTE RIVER MOUNTAIN BIKING
The early bird gets the worm! Participants start their day off with a dawn ride on some of the best regional trails. Join us and get to meet some others willing to make local adventures happen. Register to reserve your spot in the vehicle, a cup of joe for the drive, and a mountain bike (if needed). We will head out early, ride a lap, and return before 9 a.m. ready to start the day. Fees are $5 per ride for UNL students and Campus Rec members and $20 for General Public. Dates include:
• Sept. 11 | 6-9 a.m.
• Sept. 25 | 6-9 a.m.
• Oct. 9 | 6-9 a.m.

WILDERNESS PARK MOUNTAIN BIKING
Join us for a relaxing escape as we explore one of Lincoln's parks by bicycle. Just a short ride from downtown, Wilderness Park offers miles of winding forest singletrack trails to improve your bike handling abilities and reconnect with nature. Connect with the biking community with some quality trail conversation while experiencing one of Lincoln's best-kept secrets. Cost is $10 for UNL students and Campus Rec members and $20 for General Public. Two dates are offered:
• Sept. 18 | 6-8:30 p.m.
• Sept. 27 | 5:30-7:45 p.m.

SUB 24 BIKE TOUR
If you need an adventurous weekend getaway or have ever wanted to learn the basics of bike touring, join us! This tour will equip you with the basic skills needed to plan your own cycling adventures. The zero-emissions trip departs from the Outdoor Adventures Center and takes riders along a crushed limestone trail to one of Nebraska's tranquil state recreation areas. We'll carry all our food and camping gear on our bikes on this truly self-contained overnight ride. Cost is $35 for UNL students or Campus Rec members and $45 for General Public.
• Sept. 29 at 9 a.m. – Sept. 30 at 5 p.m.

BIKE MAINTENANCE SKILLS CLASS
Ever been stuck on the trail or street and not know what to do? Sign up for this class and practice basic maintenance items you can do on your own bike to get home and discuss other biking related topics. A new topic will be presented each week. Topics that will be covered include patching a flat, brake adjustments, deraileur adjustments, riding position/bike fit,and layering for winter commuting enjoyment. Each class runs two nights and is free for UNL students and Campus Rec members. General Public pay $30.
• Oct. 4 + 11 | 6-7:30 p.m.
• Oct. 30 + Nov. 6 | 6-7:30 p.m.
