Lincoln, NE - Join us on Thursday, April 18th starting at 8 a.m. on the Meier Commons green space, 1400 R St, Lincoln, NE for our annual Homerathon, a marathon reading of the Homer’s Odyssey in English. The event will run until the early hours of Friday morning. Participants and attendees are free to come and go as they please.
The ancient tradition, to perform the poems orally, is what the Homerathon continues to capture in these marathon readings of the Iliad or the Odyssey. This year Classics students are bringing the Odyssey to life for both the university and extended Nebraska communities. Come and be a part of the audience and see why the Odyssey remains relevant to our contemporary discussions of despair, valor, and homecoming.
Various other forms of entertainment will occur throughout the day, and food and drink will be available, in addition to the reading. Experts will also be able to answer any questions about Homer’s Odyssey. The event is meant to be interactive, allowing attendees to read passages for themselves. Become a part of this hands-on experience!
The Homerathon is part of an Undergraduate Creative Activities and Research Experience (UCARE) project. It is designed to help develop job skills for undergraduate students through research and leadership experiences. By organizing the Homerathon, students implement original ideas and network with the Lincoln community. Your participation supports undergraduates and makes research such as this possible.
Two other Homeric events will take place earlier in the week. Jonathan Shay will lecture on his book Achilles in Vietnam on April 16th and Michael Shiner will speak about Homer and leadership on April 17th. If you are interested in participating in the events or would like more information please email: unl.homerathon@gmail.com.
