With the NeSA-M now in place, Nebraska teachers of all grade levels are stepping up to strengthen mathematics achievement in their schools. Now more than ever teachers need new learning opportunities to help them offer high quality math courses to their students. The Nebraska Math and Science Summer Institutes (NMSSI) offer graduate mathematics and pedagogy courses using a teacher-friendly delivery model that helps teachers respond to this challenge.
To make the NMSSI professional development opportunities more affordable, UNL has agreed to offer tuition discounts to Nebraska teachers who take our summer courses. Nebraska teachers automatically qualify for a Tuition Fellowship (20% of in-state tuition) for these graduate courses. By applying through Teach Nebraska, the $50 grad school admission fee is also waived. Teachers may apply for additional fellowships from NMSSI to help cover tuition costs. http://scimath.unl.edu/nmssi. All NMSSI courses also include a free lunch each day of class.
This summer, MATH 800T: Math as a Second Language and MATH 805T: Discrete Mathematics will be offered in Scottsbluff at ESU 13. MATH 800T (Class # 3265, Sec # 953) is for teachers of grades 3-7. MATH 805T (Class # 2958, Sec # 951) is for teachers of grades 6-12. Katie Garcia, a teacher at Omaha Bryan High School and a Noyce Master Teacher at UNL, will be the lead instructor of MATH 800T, while Dr. Cheryl Miner, a former Nebraska Wesleyan University professor who now lives in O’Neill, will be teaching MATH 805T. How to Enroll:
Step 1: If you took a class through the NMSSI last summer (or any graduate course at UNL in the past year), you are eligible to register through MyRed. Instructions can be found here: http://www.unl.edu/regrec/registration-procedures. Please note that if you write down the Class Number, you can simply enter the Class Number in the Search box and that specific class will appear.
Step 2: If you have not taken a graduate course at UNL in the past year, you need to enroll at UNL as a non-degree-seeking graduate student via the Teach Nebraska website: http:///www.unl.edu/gradstudies/teachneb. The $50 graduate school application fee is waived for current teachers. On your Teach Nebraska application, you will enter the Course Number, Class Number and Section Number of each course you want to take and be automatically registered for the courses by Grad Studies. Jason Cruise will send you a confirmation email as soon as he has processed your registration. (All classes are 3 credit hours.)
Step 3: Apply for a fellowship from NMSSI to further reduce the costs of tuition and fees. Apply online via the CSMCE application portal: https://cse.unl.edu/~scimath/apps/apply.php. Start by choosing "Create an Account" to get logged in. Once in, click on the "NMSSI Fellowship Application" to get started. The deadline to apply for a fellowship is May 20, but we encourage you to apply as soon as possible.
