UNL offers graduate courses for elementary teachers

NMSSI MATH 803P Lincoln 2013
NMSSI MATH 803P Lincoln 2013

What will you learn in Summer 2014 that will enhance your ability as a mathematics teacher?

Summer has always been a time when highly motivated teachers continue their graduate education so that they return to their school in the fall eager to transfer knowledge gained into their own teaching. What’s new in recent years is the development of mathematics and pedagogy courses that emphasize mathematical knowledge for teaching delivered in a teacher friendly format. This is the mission of the Nebraska Math and Science Summer Institutes.

For all on-site NMSSI courses, current Nebraska teachers automatically qualify for a tuition fellowship from UNL equal to 20 percent of in-state, graduate tuition. Additionally, Nebraska K-12 teachers can apply for supplemental NMSSI Fellowships to further defray tuition costs for NMSSI courses. See our NMSSI website for details.

Three courses for elementary teachers will be offered in Lincoln this summer through the NMSSI. Two courses are offered as a pair from June 2-13, allowing you to pair a mathematics course with a pedagogy course. As follows are the course listings and registration steps (see full course descriptions in the accompanying stories in this email):

June 2-13

MATH 803P: Algebraic Thinking for the Elementary Classroom – Class # 3469, Sec # 591, 8 a.m. to noon
TEAC 801: Curriculum Inquiry – Class # 4333, Sec # 591, 1 p.m. – 5 p.m.

July 7-11

MATH 804P: Problem Solving and Critical Thinking in the Elementary Classroom – Class # 3471, Sec # 591, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (course instructor: Kyla Hall, LPS teacher at Kloefkorn Elementary and a Math in the Middle graduate)

How to Enroll:

Step 1: If you took a class through the NMSSI last summer (or any graduate course at UNL in the past year), you are eligible to register through MyRed: http://myred.unl.edu. Instructions can be found here: http://www.unl.edu/regrec/registration-procedures. Please note that if you write down the Class Number, you can simply enter the Class Number in the Search box and that specific class will appear.

Step 2: If you have not taken a graduate course at UNL in the past year, you need to enroll at UNL as a non-degree-seeking graduate student via the Teach Nebraska website: http:///www.unl.edu/gradstudies/teachneb. The $50 graduate school application fee is waived for current teachers. On your Teach Nebraska application, you will enter the Course Number, Class Number and Section Number of each course you want to take and be automatically registered for the courses by Grad Studies. Jason Cruise will send you a confirmation email as soon as he has processed your registration. (All classes are 3 credit hours.)

Step 3: Apply for a fellowship from NMSSI to further reduce the costs of tuition and fees. Apply online via the CSMCE application portal: https://cse.unl.edu/~scimath/apps/apply.php. Start by choosing "Create an Account" to get logged in. Once in, click on the "NMSSI Fellowship Application" to get started.

Visit our website http://scimath.unl.edu/nmssi for the enrollment steps and fellowship application. Email Lindsay Augustyn at laugustyn2@unl.edu with any questions.

The availability of NMSSI courses has led to an increase in the number of math teachers who earn a master’s degree. To learn more about opportunities to earn a master’s degree that emphasizes learning math for teaching, visit http://scimath.unl.edu/csmce/mastersdegreeinfo.php.
