Summer has always been a time when highly motivated teachers continue their graduate education so that they return to their school in the fall eager to transfer knowledge gained into their own teaching. What's new in recent years is the development of mathematics and pedagogy courses that emphasize mathematical knowledge for teaching delivered in a teacher friendly format. This is the mission of the Nebraska Math and Science Summer Institutes.
A limited number of $300 tuition fellowships are available for NMSSI courses this summer, but you must apply soon! For all on-site NMSSI courses, current Nebraska teachers also automatically qualify for a tuition fellowship from UNL equal to 20 percent of in-state, graduate tuition. See our NMSSI website for details on how to apply.
Three courses for elementary teachers will be offered in Lincoln this summer through the NMSSI. Two courses are offered as a pair from June 2-13, allowing you to pair a mathematics course with a pedagogy course. As follows are the course listings and registration steps (see full course descriptions in the accompanying stories in this email):
June 2-13
MATH 803P: Algebraic Thinking for the Elementary Classroom – Class # 3469, Sec # 591, 8 a.m. to noon
TEAC 801: Curriculum Inquiry – Class # 4333, Sec # 591, 1 p.m. – 5 p.m.
July 7-11
MATH 804P: Problem Solving and Critical Thinking in the Elementary Classroom – Class # 3471, Sec # 591, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (course instructor: Kyla Hall, LPS teacher at Kloefkorn Elementary and a Math in the Middle graduate)

The availability of NMSSI courses has led to an increase in the number of math teachers who earn a master’s degree. To learn more about opportunities to earn a master’s degree that emphasizes learning math for teaching, visit http://scimath.unl.edu/csmce/mastersdegreeinfo.php.
