Check out these math graduate courses for secondary teachers
Teachers need new learning opportunities to prepare them for higher expectations and help them offer high quality math courses to their students. The Nebraska Math and Science Summer Institutes (NMSSI) offer graduate mathematics and pedagogy courses using a teacher-friendly delivery model that helps teachers respond to this challenge. Use your LPS tuition bank credits to take a course with us this summer!
NMSSI offers courses in either one or two weeks to help you take advantage of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's professional development opportunities conveniently. Math 811T: Functions for High School Teachers will be offered on the UNL City Campus, and Math 896: Functional Reasoning in STEM for Secondary Mathematics Teachers for grades 7-12 teachers will be offered in Crete this summer.
Math 811T: Functions for High School Teachers (Class # 14258, Sec # 691) is July 10-14 and 17-21, 8 a.m. to noon, in 110 Avery Hall, with instructor Dr. Allan Donsig of the math department at UNL.
Math 811T is a study of functions in the pre-calculus, high school mathematics curriculum from an advanced viewpoint. Functions will be investigated by examining their utility in more advanced courses and applications, enabling teachers to better understand the important aspects and appropriate emphasis of a concept. Content will include polynomial, circular (trig), and exponential functions, and their connections to calculus.
Math 811T is being paired with SOCI 898: Social Psychological Processes in the STEM Classroom: Activating STEM Identities (Class # 15014, Sec # 591) 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. in 110 Avery Hall, with instructor Dr. Trish Wonch Hill of the sociology department at UNL.
Also this summer, the NDE and UNL have partnered to offer a professional development workshop on functions for secondary math teachers through Nebraska Partnership TEAMS. The nearest regional workshop to you is in Crete. MATH 896: Functional Reasoning in STEM for Secondary Mathematics Teachers will be held June 5-9 and 12-16, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., at Crete Middle School. This course will focus on content knowledge for secondary mathematics teachers, connecting functions across the secondary mathematics curriculum to each other and to science content. Functions arise when modeling physical phenomena, providing connections across the curriculum and to the world outside school. Through the content of functions, teachers in this course will solve mathematical problems, model and represent mathematical problems, communicate mathematical ideas effectively, and make mathematical connections.
TEAMS participants are paid a stipend of $15 per hour of class (for up to $1,200). You can choose to use your LPS tuition bank points to take Math 896 for credit and keep your $1,200 stipend! Teachers who live more than 35 miles one-way from their TEAMS site will receive mileage reimbursement for commuting to class. Read more and APPLY BY MAY 1 at: http://scimath.unl.edu/csmce/teams
