The 2020 OLLI/PLAYHOUSE Radio Active Players production will be the musical classic, “The Pirates of Penzance.” This will be the group’s first performance under the series “Broadway Senior,” a new national program pioneered at the Playhouse.

Gilbert and Sullivan's hilarious, hopeful farce follows young Frederic, an orphan who has mistakenly been apprenticed to an ineffectual but raucous band of pirates. He disavows the pirates' way of life and falls for the beautiful Mabel, daughter of Major-General Stanley. When the Pirate King discovers that General Stanley has lied about being an orphan to keep the pirates from stealing all his belongings and carrying off his bevy of beautiful daughters, an "ingenious paradox" may prevent the budding romance. Add a bungling Keystone Kops police force and hilarity abounds.

Gilbert and Sullivan’s Pirates has been making audiences laugh since its premiere in 1879. The Broadway Senior version is based on the hit 1980 Broadway revival produced by the New York Public Shakespeare Festival.

The Pirates of Penzance Broadway Senior will be performed on March 27, 28, 29, April 3, 4, 5 in the Studio Theatre. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays and 2 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.

Auditions will be held January 27 and 28 from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. First rehearsal will be February 3 with rehearsals on Mondays and Wednesdays from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Studio Theatre.

Morrie Enders will direct with Ashley Daily as music director. Many roles are available for actors age 50 and over. Our Playhouse pirates and police are progressive and may be played by both men and women.
