Cure your summertime choral blues with Abendmusik’s summer singalong event. OLLI members can participate in two special sessions of this event with Pamela Starr, professor of Music History at UNL, and a reception with Tom Trenney, minister of music at First-Plymouth Church and artistic director of Abendmusik.
Brahms’ “Ein deutsches Requiem, Op. 45," represents not only one of the landmark sacred choral works of the nineteenth century, it is also the culmination of a long tradition of such works used both in funeral services and also as commemorations and memorials of the departed.
We will explore the tradition behind Brahms’s masterpiece, the genesis of his “German Requiem,” the ways that this work for chorus, soloists and orchestra compares with contemporary treatments using the traditional Latin liturgicaltexts. We will conclude with a focus on several movements of Brahms’ extended work to understand how the composer deployed all the resources at his command to provide music of supreme and personal consolation to all who mourn a departed loved one.

Participating OLLI members will receive a vocal score of Brahms’ Requiem on July 25 as part of the course.
