Challenging times call for creativity in connecting residential communities

While COVID-19 has made the current residential experience different than previous years, resident assistants and hall staff are committed to helping students have meaningful learning experiences through the Nebraska Residential Experience. Through this intentional, guiding program, residents can find many opportunities to create relationships, grow and find purpose.

“Students can still have a robust co-curricular experience that matches academic learning they encounter at UNL,” says Dustin Rollins, director of Residential Education at Nebraska. Opportunities to engage may take some new forms this year.

Hall programming focused on five areas of Husker Student Power – Purpose, Ownership, Well-being, Engagement, and Relationships – is presented through platforms such as Zoom and Yellowdig, or a hybrid of the two. One such program that provides engagement is virtual study groups. Last semester, 465 student residents signed up for study groups that met virtually to help provide academic support. Residents will receive an invitation to sign up for study groups at the beginning of the spring semester.

Residence Life partnered with on-campus departments to offer digital student learning “workshops” via Canvas. Each week, five live sessions were presented and recorded for students to view at a later time. Recorded sessions and other residential learning modules can be viewed through Canvas.

Residence Life is making well-being and relationships a priority focus for the spring semester. Hall programming will feature opportunities for students to find ways to connect with other students, both in-person and virtually, and to improve health and mental well-being.
