It’s important to recognize that academic pressures can lead to your student having some struggles. Students share that they feel overwhelmed, anxious and sad during this time – commonly known as the mid-semester slump. Consequently, their schoolwork may suffer.

Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) professionals understand that as a parent or guardian you may not feel comfortable seeing your student unhappy or uncomfortable. So, what can you do to support your young scholar?

  1. Encourage them to reach out to their professor and let them know about the challenges they’re experiencing and ask for tips for success in that class.
  2. Encourage them to talk to their academic adviser, who can help them to develop a plan to better manage their current concerns.
  3. Encourage them to take advantage of the academic support systems that exist on campus, like the Writing Center, Math Resource Center and other tutoring resources that can be incredibly helpful.
  4. And remember, more than anything, your student needs your love, understanding and support at a time like this.
