It’s important to recognize that academic pressures can lead to your student having some struggles. Students share that they feel overwhelmed, anxious and sad during this time – commonly known as the mid-semester slump. Consequently, their schoolwork may suffer.
Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) professionals understand that as a parent or guardian you may not feel comfortable seeing your student unhappy or uncomfortable. So, what can you do to support your young scholar?
- Encourage them to reach out to their professor and let them know about the challenges they’re experiencing and ask for tips for success in that class.
- Encourage them to talk to their academic adviser, who can help them to develop a plan to better manage their current concerns.
- Encourage them to take advantage of the academic support systems that exist on campus, like the Writing Center, Math Resource Center and other tutoring resources that can be incredibly helpful.
- And remember, more than anything, your student needs your love, understanding and support at a time like this.
CAPS is ready to provide emotional support and direction for your students’ needs. Students should call (402) 472-7450 to set up an appointment.
