UNL Student Health 101 is a free online magazine for you and your students, but the focus isn’t really on health alone, but rather on wellness. How are the two different? UNL defines a “well” person as one who is aware of and makes healthy choices for a balanced and successful life. Wellness extends beyond physical health to include social, emotional, occupational, environment, spiritual, and intellectual health. This is illustrated in each of our monthly issues which feature videos of healthy recipes and quick workouts for students, as well as articles on maintaining healthy relationships, minimizing stress, and making the most of a small budget.

In May, we are highlighting the importance of “mind & body” in an article about disordered eating. Disordered eating and body image issues are prevalent on college campuses; and can manifest in many different ways. These issues are impacted by number of influences: social, emotional, and environmental. While some of those influences are not controllable or preventable, writer Jenna Volpe, Registered Dietitian recommends taking the focus off self-criticism when you’re around those who may be struggling with body image issues or disordered eating. Consider the effect that social and environmental cues may have on someone whose well-being is fragile. If your student or their friends and acquaintances are struggling with body image, check out the article in the issue link below.
