UNL Student Health 101- How to be Happy

This month UNL Student Health 101 (http://readsh101.com/unl.html) is featuring multiple articles about emotional health. For college students there are many stressors that can make happiness a struggle, and there are just as many coping mechanisms. Many of us get stuck in the vicious cycle of trying to obtain happiness by purchasing more and more possessions. Author Dr. Lyubomirsky says in our article on how to be happy that “Who you are is the sum of your experiences but not the sum of your things.” As this article illuminates, the high of making a new purchase can quickly fade into buyer’s remorse and financial troubles. Unlike possessions, experiences create memories that can last a lifetime; they can also help us relate to other people and feel connected to our communities. It’s important to realize too that not all experiences are created equal. Watching TV doesn’t create as many memories as going to a concert or enjoying a bike ride with friends. If your student struggles with a lack of happiness, or the tendency to try to buy that happiness, encourage them to read this article and to explore the many free experiences open to them on campus. Many great stories can be made at the UNL Outdoor Adventures Center rock climbing wall or at a free concert sponsored by UNL Student Involvement! If your student’s lack of happiness is leaning towards depression, encourage them to utilize the three free counseling sessions offered to every student by the University Health Center’s Counseling and Psychological Services (http://health.unl.edu/counseling-and-psychological-services-caps). Emotional health impacts every other area of our lives, from academic performance to physical health. Tell your student to read UNL Student Health 101 for more tips on how to maximize their own personal wellness!
