“EPA Takes Action to Prevent Ecological Risks from Two Herbicides”

Recently the EPA released “Interim registration review decisions (IDs)” for two pyridine herbicides. The herbicides in question are Aminopyralid and Picloram which can both be used in Non-agricultural and agricultural settings. These sites can vary from turf, Right of way, pastures, turf, and rangeland. They have also been used to control invasive species and woody weed species in pastures but also to preserve land that’s primary use is conservation.

IDs are a part of a multi-step registration review process that help to reduce risks with registered pesticides. The IDs for these two herbicides included stronger measures to reduce and prevent residue accumulation in compost but also reducing the risk of damage to non-target organisms. Other pyridine herbicides may potentially receive updates to label requirements in regards to compost. The process of re-evaluating pesticides is an important requirement of the FIFRA. For questions about the process of reviewing a registered pesticide please see https://www.epa.gov/pesticide-reevaluation for more information.
The primary concern for the herbicides is compost and residue persistence. Some of the actions the EPA plans to take are as follows:

Off site use of plants or manure is prohibited for bedding and compost until 18 months after application.
Livestock must be grazed for three days on forage that hasn’t been treated before moving to a site for manure collection, or sensitive crops are grown.

Residential turf will be removed as a site on all labels for clopyralid.
Compost pictograms will be updated on pesticide labels for management of treated materials.
Registrants must participate in a stewardship program and provide education outreach for stakeholders that are affected by herbicide residues in compost.
These are not the only considerations or planned risk mitigation strategies. For more information on these products and their review process please see https://www.epa.gov/ingredients-used-pesticide-products/registration-review-pyridine-and-pyrimidine-herbicides .
