Project Coordinator/Admin Tech, University of Nebraska–Lincoln, Center for Science, Mathematics, and Computer Education.

1. How long have you been at your institution?

I have been working at UNL since 2019 and in the Center for Science, Mathematics, and Computer Education since May 2023.

2. Who is your favorite STEM character in a book, movie or TV show?
It’s a tie between Violet Baudelaire (an inventor) from A Series of Unfortunate Events and Dr. Frank-N-Furter (a scientist) from The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

3. What inspired you to get involved in S-STEM work?
I joined the PROSPECT S-STEM team to help with project management during a colleague's leave of absence. I am also passionate about increasing access to STEM education and centering support for students!

4. What skills or knowledge are you learning throughout the program that you find most useful in your career?
I am just beginning work on the PROSPECT S-STEM project, but I am excited to find out what I will learn during the process!

5. What advice would you give to students who transfer from 2YC to 4YC?
I went straight to 4YC after high school, so I can't speak from personal experience, but I would say remember it's okay to ask for help and advice when navigating institutional processes like registering for classes or changing majors.

6. Is your involvement in S-STEM work worthwhile to your graduate school/professional journey? If so, please elaborate.
As a project coordinator whose work deals with a variety of STEM topics—from network science to One Health to mathematics teacher education and now to S-STEM—I gain something valuable from every project I help manage. Since my educational background is in the humanities, I find learning STEM content on the job interesting.

7. What skill do you think is most valuable for students considering a STEM career?
Compassion—we need STEM professionals who can use STEM knowledge and practices to address complex worldwide issues, including Grand Challenges identified by UNL such as climate resilience, health equity, and science and technology literacy for society. STEM professionals who care have the power to make the world a better place for everyone.

8. Tell us about the most rewarding experience that you have had during your STEM career.
As mentioned above, it has been exciting to learn STEM content during my professional career since my formal education is in English and German language/literature. My favorite experience has been attending the NIH SciEd conference in Washington, D.C., and connecting with NIH Science Education Partnership Award teams from across the country!
