November's Healthy Habit of the Month is being aware of your caffeine intake. As we get later into the semester and you may be feeling behind on school and getting less sleep, you might be trying to compensate for a lack of sleep with more caffeine. It's a common occurrence and many college students do it, but did you know about the negative effects of caffeine?
Sure, a cup of coffee here and there definitely won't hurt. In fact, for most people, it's not harmful to consume up to 400mg of caffeine a day. However, if you consume too much, you might start to notice some negative side effects, such as insomnia, headaches, dizziness, dehydration, anxiety, and depression.
If you notice yourself becoming too dependent on caffeine and are feeling negative effects within your body, think about ways you can change your habits to feel like your best self again. Aim to get more sleep, but be intentional about it. Purposefully get your work done during the day so you can be in bed early. Be aware of how much caffeine you consume every day, and try not to go over 400mg. Drinking lots of water instead of extra caffeine is a great substitute!
