Make a difference in your community by helping disadvantaged youth and adults throughout Nebraska. Become an AmeriCorps member and help provide either academic support OR financial literacy and VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) in community learning centers and/or afterschool programs. Develop outreach skills and earn an education award for future higher education or to pay off existing higher education debts. The members serve as AmeriCorps Service Scholars, under the supervision of host site supervisors and Nebraska Campus Compact representatives.
Specific Duties
Education Focus Area
• Provide academic support to disadvantaged students at community learning center / afterschool program sites.
Economic Opportunity Focus Area
• Provide financial literacy education to economically disadvantaged individuals (budgeting, credit management, etc.) through community-based organizations or if possible, at community learning center / afterschool program sites.
• Assist in providing volunteer income tax assistance (VITA) tax sites at campus compact member institutions or at the community learning center / afterschool program sites.
Necessary Skills
• A strong interest and understanding of community service and service-learning programs.
• Personal experience in community service and/or service-learning programs.
• Commitment to the mission of the project and its impact on communities.
• Ability and willingness to work with diverse populations.
• Knowledge and interest in working with fellow college students and adolescents.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Background and/or majors in education, accounting or finance a plus.
AmeriCorps Service Scholars serve minimum time (300 hours), for one year with varying work hours and receive a modest stipend and an education award of $1,175.
