Strength of the Month: Adaptability

People strong in the Adaptability theme prefer to “go with the flow.” They tend to be “now” people who take things as they come and discover the future one day at a time.

Adaptability is the ability to live in the present, freely and willingly able to respond to the demands and changes of the moment. When things change, people with the strength of Adaptability easily adapt and change—they are flexible. They come most alive living in the moment. Because of this, they might not see the future as a set plan or a fixed destination.

Some with the StrengthsFinder theme of Adaptability would rather not plan ahead, because that would be too constraining or confining. On the other hand, others with Adaptability need parameters or instructions first. Then they color in that entire space with their plans, options, and ideas that are very intentional and productive. Think of water flowing down a mountainside — any rock is not an obstacle for someone with Adaptability, it is an opportunity to try a different path and smoothly flow around the stream with ease.

For Adaptability to be successful, they should:
•Seek roles in which success depends upon responding to constantly changing circumstances.
•Fine-tune their responsiveness. For example, if your work pressure comes in unpredictable spurts, practice the first three moves you will always make when the pressure hits.
•Never apologize for their spontaneity. On the contrary, help others realize how many experiences might be missed if you don't seize the moment now.

Consider:
•Avoiding roles that demand structure and predictability. These roles will quickly frustrate you, make you feel inadequate, and stifle your independence.
•Look to others for planning. People who are strong in themes such as Focus, Strategic, or Belief can help you shape your longer-term goals, leaving you to excel at dealing with the day-to-day variations.
