Montana State Parks

Montana State Parks is pleased to announce that they are recruiting for individuals to serve at anthropologically significant State Parks.

Apply your anthropological background while gaining experience and training in the fields of outdoor recreation, parks management, interpretive services, education, community outreach, and volunteer management. This opportunity will take place amid the natural wonders and rich cultural heritage of Montana State Parks and these members will complete projects that have lasting impacts which benefit both the parks and the communities where they exist. Whether they are teaching kids about history, or organizing a group of volunteers for to preserve historic structures; their members lead the way in our communities by exhibiting stewardship principles and a strong conservation ethic through hands on engagement.

Montana State Parks is home to seven National Historic Land Marks and numerous sites on the National Register of Historic Places. Their AmeriCorps program is looking to place national service members at a number of these sites. Rosebud Battlefield is the site of a historic battle between the forces of General Crook and the Cheyenne. First Peoples Buffalo Jump is a site where bison were hunted by Native American Tribes. And Council Grove was the site of the Hellgate Treaty that established the Flathead Indian Reservation.

These sites need to have their story told to the public, and who better than an Anthropologist to do so?

Individuals serving with the program will complete 1700 hours of service (10 months) and will receive biweekly living allowance and a Segal Education Award of to $6,195 upon successful completion of a term of service. The Segal Education Award can be used towards college tuition, paying off student loans. All Montana State Parks AmeriCorps members are also eligible to place their student loans in deferment during the term of service. Members will also receive valuable trainings such as a Certified Interpretive Guide certification; and all members are eligible to be trained in Heart-saver First Aid/CPR/AED; Volunteer Management in Montana State Parks; Traditional (Native) Games Training.

To qualify, members must be a legal U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident who is at least 18 years old and has a high school diploma or GED, though some college experience is preferred. These positions are filled on a rolling basis, so early application is encouraged. Applications are accepted through December 4, 2020.
