382 Avant-Garde: Music, Art, and Ideas in Modern France (2.30-3.20 MWF)
No prereq—taught in English, no knowledge of French required.
Modern France was born, toward the end of the eighteenth century, with the furious overthrow of an entire system of government and society; innovation, revolt, and irreverence are the very heart of French and Francophone culture. In this course we’ll trace the effects of that avant-garde spirit on French art, music, and thought, from the revolution up to the present day. If you have an interest in art or music, or in French writing, or simply in remaking your notions of what’s possible in artistic and intellectual creation, this class will speak to you; it would also pair very neatly with French 453 / 853. Taught by Jordan Stump.
