Name: Grace Evans
Majors while at UNL: Global Studies, Political Science, and French with minors in human rights and humanitarian affairs and national security studies, graduated 2018.
Why Global Studies?
I appreciated having the flexibility to study abroad and earn credits for a wide range of experiences. I also enjoyed my UCARE research and how my professors took the time to involve and mentor undergraduates. Since leaving school, I’ve learned that the ability to choose from such a wide range of courses and pursue a liberal arts education at such a large university is uncommon.
Extracurricular Involvement:
I had a wealth of experiences during my time at UNL, including the Middlebury Language Program in Vermont, a DC internship, studying abroad in France, two summers in Istanbul, as well as things closer to home such as working at the Capitol, UCARE research, volunteering at Lincoln Literacy, and the Environmental Sustainability Committee.
What have you been up to since graduation:
After graduation, I had the privilege of doing a Fulbright ETA grant in Morocco. I actually brought my cat from Rabat to New York City, where I worked for the brand Glossier. In 2020, I decided to pursue an MA in international peace and security at Kings College London. I had a few odd jobs such as visual merchandising for a small clothing brand here, stayed with a friend for a couple of months in Nairobi, and brought my cat to the UK before getting my current role as a research analyst for environmental harms.
Advice for current Global Studies majors:
My best advice is to not put too much pressure on yourself to begin working professionally or go to graduate school right away. I had a plan on what type of job I would get in New York and then do a dual MA at Sciences Po, but this fell through due to Covid. Though I have struggled with feeling “behind” my friends, this insecurity is outweighed by my gratitude for all these exceptional experiences and relationships I’ve formed. Life isn’t linear! I still have a dynamic and interesting career and a vibrant life in a city I love.
