Black Hills National Forest Summer 2024 Seasonal Archeologist Positions

The Forest is hiring nine seasonal archeology technicians and one crew lead across its four ranger districts:

Position duties may include some or all of the following: archaeological pedestrian survey, site documentation, feature and artifact identification, mapping, conducting subsurface excavations to determine site eligibility for the National Register of Historic Places, data and records management, assisting with report writing, and historical research. Helpful skills include the ability to hike 5+ miles daily in rugged and diverse terrain under a variety of conditions, attention to detail, and the willingness to work in a team environment, including interacting and engaging with other agency resource specialists, agency partners, volunteers, and the public. Additionally, as time allows, we like to train our seasonal employees for higher level positions within the federal government and the cultural resource management field. As an archeological technician you will be helping to fulfill the Black Hills National Forest’s Section 106 obligations for a diverse range of projects planned for the 2024 field season. These projects include, but are not limited to, timber sales, vegetation management, fuels reduction, range developments, telecommunications, recreation, mining and minerals, wildfire, prescribed fire, and many more.
