Name: Shelby Janke
Majors: Global Studies & Spanish
Minor: Human Rights & Humanitarian Affairs (Specializations in Global Resources & the Environment, Latin America)
Why Global Studies? I chose Global Studies because it allows me to study several of my passions: language, the environment, and human rights. My favorite thing about this major is that the material in so many of my classes connect in some way, which proves to me that Global Studies is interdisciplinary and very useful when it comes to critical thinking and problem solving. Some of my favorite classes have included Cultural Anthropology, Individual & Cultural Perspectives on the Environment, and Portuguese.
Internship/Study abroad: I am planning on studying abroad somewhere in Latin America next summer. But before then, I will be traveling to Guatemala with the Center for Civic Engagement this May to participate in some service work. I think it is important to remember that studying abroad is not the only way that one can travel outside of the country - service is a great way to experience and witness firsthand the poverty in a nation, which allows you to understand the real issues within the country's structure and leadership.
Post-graduation plans: After graduation, I would like to work for a non-profit or foundation that focuses on environmental sustainability or leadership development. I would eventually like to attend graduate school for a masters degree in something along the lines of community development.
